Rhetorical Rock Questions Answered
Q: How do we dance when our earth is turning?
A: It is important to remember that the earth’s apparent rotation is only relative to the sun, sentimentally and erroneously referred to as a “true solar day,” that in a cosmic void (i.e. this goddamn universe) without an absolute center, it is merely an unqualifiable speck hovering in infinite space. Let’s not even get into the axial tilt (or, “obliquity”) of the earth, and the grander spacial implications of its centric vs. objective rotation(s), the latter arguably null. So basically, dear somewhat angry bald guy, since the earth isn’t actually turning beyond the trite perceived parameters of our solar system, we will dance the only way this sad world has taught us: until the bar closes; until that final person, lit red by the last flickering candle, equally lonely and torn open, ventures a cringe-worthy gaze through our eyes and into our skulls, that dangerous interior mixed with vodka and gin, a hollow place laid to rest on their pillow, anyone’s pillow, by two considerate hands cupped into a prayer, maybe an hour later.

The Thrill is Gone
Ronnie Stewart, the founder of the Bay Area Blues Society, tells of Oakland’s rich history in music in this article on The Oakbook:
“Oakland’s history is music. It has the same bloodline as Chicago, Beale Street (in Memphis) and New Orleans.”
“B.B. King’s biggest hit, ‘The Thrill is Gone’ was written here by Roy Hawkins. He was breaking up with his girlfriend and wrote it right here on Seventh and Center Streets. Etta James, Big Mama Thornton and Sugar Pie DeSanto lived in the same house at Eighth and Peralta.
Otis Redding played at the Continental Club on Twelfth Street. Al Green’s first west coast appearance was at Esther’s Orbit Room on Seventh Street, the location of Oakland’s legendary stretch of blues and jazz clubs.
“I was raised at Eighth and Adeline,” Stewart recalls. “I’ll never forget, they used to put all the posters for the shows up on Adeline. If I had known, I could have had one great collection of blues posters.”
Oakland was known for its musicians. “It was a breeding ground for musicians, “ Stewart said. “Prince, Barry White they came here to get musicians. Because of the blues roots, people had an ear, they were creative. They understood music. Sly (Stone), the Whispers, Johnny Otis all nurtured their careers in Oakland.”

Tuned Pale Ale is a product that explores the musical affordances in everyday objects and promotes social spontaneity. While drinking beer, people become musically encouraged and often start making start making music with objects around them. This product aims to promote more of this type of social interaction. This product aims to inform users about the musical qualities of existing bottles and to make the bottle a better instrument.
The label indicates what notes can be played when the beer reaches certain levels by blowing across the top of the bottle. Cool!
Not pictured, but click through to see:
- The box/holder as an instrument
- Ridges added to the side of the bottle that can be played with the cap

An upcoming collaboration between Ben Folds and Nick Hornby, Lonely Avenue, features songs written by Hornby and set to music by Folds. I also recently saw a video of their collaboration with local sweeties (and internet sensation) Pomplamoose, which made me squeal a little bit inside.
Again, another album that I’m excited about and it’s due the day after my birthday, see a trend here?

Even though this is a new song, it’s classic OMD. I am quite excited for the new album, their first new release in 14 years, which is being released right around my birthday. ;)

Nice to see Andrew Bird’s sense of humor. :)
Margaret Cho Kills Andrew Bird
Not really, of course. But our favorite whistling violinist accompanies the comedian/actor/burlesque vamp/now singer on the song “I’m Sorry” off her upcoming album, Cho-Dependent. The album features Cho working with a wide range of indie-rock superstars, from Ani DiFranco to Grant Lee Buffalo to Tegan and Sarah. It’s due out Aug. 24, and is available for preorder now.
